Ortho-K

An Overview of Ortho-K at the Brentwood Vision Center

At Brentwood Vision Center, we take a lot of pride in our efforts to stay on top of the latest advances in the field of optometry. We are here to make sure that everyone in the Brentwood, Bayshore, and Central Islip, NY, areas has access to a trained optometrist who knows about the latest treatments in the field. This includes ortho-k.

An Overview of Ortho-K

Ortho-K stands for orthokeratology and is a process that involves contacts that are designed to be worn overnight. Ortho-k lenses are designed specifically with the purpose of reshaping your corneas as you sleep, thereby correcting many kinds of refractive errors. The goal of ortho-k lenses is to provide clear vision without the need to wear glasses or contacts during the day.

There are two main reasons why someone might be prescribed ortho-k lenses. The first is to correct refractive errors within the eyes. These include issues such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. The other main reason why this treatment might be prescribed is to help slow down the progression of myopia that takes place during childhood.

It is important for everyone to note that this treatment has been offered as an alternative to laser eye surgery. While these contacts can help correct someone’s vision, ortho-k has to be done regularly. Otherwise, someone’s eyes might revert back to the way they were.
